A NEW £46,000 acoustic fence is to be built by the owners of Mildenhall Stadium in order for sporting events to continue at the venue.
The move has been taken by owners RDC Promotions after the stadium was issued with a sound abatement order following a complaint to Forest Heath Council from a resident living close to the stadium who was concerned about noise levels inside the arena
.

Dave Coventry, of RDC Promotions, said: "It started off as a complaint from a neighbour who has recently moved here about the noise from the motocross.

"Then all off a sudden it included the noise from the greyhounds, stock cars and speedway racing. Tests were carried out and they found the levels of noise to be intrusive.

"We have the military base just up the road and when planes fly over the stadium you can't hear anything. Therefore I find it hard to believe that the what goes on in the stadium is an intrusion."

The new fence, which will be constructed of wood and steel, will stand three metres high in the north east of the stadium and two metres high around the remainder. Work on the new fence has until January 2009 to be completed for it to comply with the abatement order.

News of the order came as a blow to the management of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers speedway outfit.

Should work on the fence not be completed by January, then the club would be forced to fold for the third time in its 33-year history.

Jonathan Chapman, co-promoter of the Fen Tigers, said: "It seems strange to me that a noise complaint can be made when there are planes constantly flying overhead but people have rights and they have been expressed.

"Hopefully it will be sorted in time for us to declare our intent to race in the new National League."
