A PENALTY in stoppage time saw Mildenhall Town exit this season's FA Vase at the hands of hosts VCD Athletic at Old Road, writes Liam Apicella.
Mildenhall held a half-time lead courtesy of a superb half volley from Matty Robinson but they were unable to build on their advantage.

In what was a fairly even opening 45 minutes, neither goalkeeper was forced into any real action.

With 35 mi
nutes gone, Owen Paynter spurned the game's best chance, lifting the ball over the bar from close range after Robbie Harris had flicked it into his path.

With the half time whistle fast approaching, the teams looked to be going into the break level. However, Robinson collected a clearance from a corner before striking the ball into the bottom corner of the net from 18 yards.

VCD came out for the second half in much more positive fashion and on the hour they were level. Shaun Marshall made a decent save from close range but the rebound was turned in from 12 yards.

The visitors introduced Tom Youngs into the action with 15 minutes remaining and the change brought Mildenhall back to life.

Tony Scully fired just wide and Youngs had a shot from distance blocked during the last 10 minutes.

The tie was decided deep into stoppage time when Lewis Baillie was judged to have handled the ball inside his own box.

The resultant spot kick was smashed straight down the middle of the goal with Marshall diving to his right.

Mildenhall Town 3, Wisbech Town 1 - Ridgeons League Premier Division

MILDENHALL Town put a disastrous start behind them to claim all three points against visiting Wisbech Town at Recreation Way on Tuesday evening.

The Fenmen, whose manager Steve Taylor resigned late last week, took the lead with only two minutes gone.

Former Mildenhall defender Richard Harnwell met a curling free kick with a powerful downward header which left Shaun Marshall in the home goal flat footed.

The setback sparked the hosts into life and Darren Coe almost put his side level with 20 minutes gone. A short corner from Stephen Spriggs fell to the centre back six yards from goal but goalkeeper Chris Horton smothered his effort.

But just a minute later, Mildenhall equalized courtesy of the free-scoring Robbie Harris.

Captain Matty Robinson won possession on the edge of the Wisbech box before picking out Harris to tap into an empty net.

With half time approaching, Harris again found the net against his former club when firing in from the edge of the box following a superb passing move which he started.

The second half was largely one-way traffic with the home side in complete control of the match.

Michael Harvey crossed from deep just after the break to Robinson, but Horton showed fantastic reflexes to deny the midfielder with 52 minutes gone.

Just after the hour, Tom Youngs put the result beyond any doubt when he headed in an inviting cross from Spriggs.

In the closing stages, a combination of poor finishing and splendid goalkeeping from Horton saw Mildenhall fail to extend their lead further as they got back to winning ways after a poor run of results.
