NEWMARKET boxer Matt Jack has carried on where the GB Olympic team left off by taking gold at this year's World Firefighting Games in Liverpool.
The New Astley Club boxer outfought his French opponent over three two-minute rounds to take the light heavyweight contest 6-2 on points – his 16th career win in 28 bouts.

"I'm over the moon," he said. "He was a tough opponent but I always felt in control of the fight.

"A lot of credit has got to go to Mark O'Reilly for helping me win this medal."

O'Reily, coach at the New Astley Club said: "He completely dominated the fight. He has trained very hard for this and deserves the medal."

Jack only joined the fire team at Marshall's Airport, Cambridge, last October after spending six years in the Marines.

The 27 year old has endured mixed fortunes in his debut season for the Newmarket club, winning just one of his five fights.

"I've had a bit of a poor season this year with four split decisions going against me," he said. "I can't be doing much wrong but I just keep getting piped at the post."

Despite postings in Iraq, Afghanistan and Beirut, Jack has always found time to return to Newmarket before his fights.

"I've trained at the New Astley since I took up boxing five seasons ago," he explained. "When I got leave in the marines, I always came back up here to train.

"I'm just going to take things step by step and see how I get on. Hopefully I will progress up the ABA ladder."

Earlier this year, the Nimbus Way resident picked up the award for the club's most dedicated trainer at the their annual awards night.
